The Deal is nostalgic for me, it’s the first purely romance book I read, introducing (and subsequently addicting) me to the genre. I will do my best to remain unbiased but take this review with a grain of salt. Hannah has been crushing over this football player for a long while now and will do pretty much anything to get closer to him, including tutoring and fake dating the school’s star hockey player Garrett. (can you tell I love fake dating?)
The story is such a fun and light read that I couldn’t put it down, and I still go back and re-read my favorite sections when I need a break from the heavier books I read. Not to say there aren’t serious topics though. I found myself enjoying the balance Kennedy struck and loving the pacing of the plot. It wasn’t just one catastrophe after another.
I will say that this book is trope after trope after trope, I ate it up, but it’s probably going to get on your nerves if you think too critically about it. I also didn’t really enjoy the dual perspective, but that is entirely up to preference and it didn’t bother me as I continued to read. Definitely not a literary masterpiece, but definitely high on my recommendations list 4.5/5 stars from me.
